Not a spectacle.
Not made for consumption.
Inspired by Guy Debord's 1967 book "The Society of the Spectacle", I created this work as a form of commentary on today's world.
I understand that there's far more nuance on the topic than a 1:30 minute video could ever uncover, but I find it important to at least create the grounds for conversation on what has become a regular part of our day to day lives.
We're more connected than ever, yet more disconnected than ever. We're constantly funneled information and products, we've lost the ability to be cognitive on what we're taking part in; and have essentially become trained to consume without intent. Critical thinking and real identity have given way to whatever trend or option is readily available. And as much as I can be critical on the topic I do understand it's one thing to be critical about the issue, it's another thing to actually try to work against it.
I think the first part of working against it is naming the issue and understanding that we're all caught up in it in one way shape or form. So that alleviates the issue of feeling isolated in the problem itself. A good friend of mine made a point that we can work against these issues by coming together, and noted that specifically in these days we can't afford to be disconnected over trivial differences or lack of understanding.
With increasing models of misinformation, fabricated content, and decreased real world communities along with lost interpersonal skills; connecting with each other can feel like a daunting task but let's trade a quick hit of dopamine from what's easy and known, and shift it towards doing the work that really needs to be done to create fulfilling communities and relationships.
Let's shift towards creating and being part of the life we'd actually want to be living, not the one that's fed to us.
